Always use coasters under all drink glasses.  Because alcohol and citrus juices are acidic, they will etch or dull the stone surface.  Take care to not place hot items directly on stone surface.  Be sure to use place mats or trivets under china, ceramics, or other objects that may scratch the stone surface. Granite is the exception—Typically a bullet-proof stone and very popular in kitchens because of its durability and longevity, it can lose its luster and take on stains from oils.   Granite is generally not affected by acidic juices, tea, coffee, and wine.

It is best to dry dust mop your floors frequently.   Since sand, dirt and grit are the main culprits of damage to floors due to their abrasiveness, floor mats will aide in minimizing the damage.  Always apply a neutral PH stone cleaner, mild dishwashing soap and warm water.   Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the cleaning solution and dry with a terry cloth towel. If you leave residue from the cleaner, just repeat the cleaning process and make sure to change the water frequently.

Bottom line, it makes sense to seal most stone surfaces.  For one, if properly sealed, it will allow extra time to wipe up a spill and the stone will be more resistant to everyday dirt. In effect, by sealing your stone, it seals the pores that will prevent spills or liquid from soaking into the stone.  This way a spill will remain on the surface allowing you to blot up and remove.

Sealers do breakdown overtime, whether it be from heavy traffic, harsh cleaners or the constant penetrating outside light.  As the sealer breaks down, so does the protection on your stone leaving the surface vulnerable to staining.  It is recommended that you seal your stone, tile and grout surfaces every 1-2 years.
